The Eight Moon Phases Explained
The moon doesn’t just appear and disappear. It moved through a continuous cycle of eight distinct phases, each one a natural transition from darkness to fullness and back again. Once you start paying attention to them, you’ll notice them everywhere - in your energy levels, your emotions, your motivation.
Here’s what each phase actually means:
New Moon
The cycle begins in darkness. The moon is positioned between the earth and sun, making it invisible in the night sky. This is the phase of intention. The quiet before anything begins. It’s the best time to ask yourself what you want to call in, what you’re ready to start, what seeds you want to plant.
Waxing Crescent
A small sliver of light appears. Energy is building slowly. This phase is about taking the first small steps toward whatever you set your intention around during the new moon. Momentum starts here, even when it doesn’t feel like it yet.
First Quarter
The moon is half illuminated. You’re at thee midpoint between intention and fullness, and this is often where resistance shows up. Decisions need to be made. Obstacles appear. The first quarter asks you to commit anyway.
Waxing Gibbous
Almost full. This phase is about refinement. You’re close, but not quite there yet. Trust the process, continue forward. The work you’ve been doing is about to pay off.
Full Moon
Peak Illumination. Everything is visible now, including the things you’d rather not look at. The full moon is associated with clarity, revelation, and heightened emotion. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s always honest.
Waning Gibbous
The light begins to recede. This is a phase of gratitude and reflection - looking back at what the full moon revealed and integrating it. What did you learn? What are you grateful for?
Last Quarter
Half illuminated again, but shrinking. This is the phase of release. Letting go of what didn’t work, what no longer serves you, what you’ve been holding onto too tightly.
Waning Crescent
The final sliver before darkness. Rest. Surrender. The cycle is almost complete and your only job right now is to let it finish. This is the phase of trust. Knowing that the new moon is coming and the cycle will begin again.
The Phases journal works with four of these: new moon, waxing crescent, full moon, waning moon - as a simplified framework for a single month of self-reflection. If you’ve ever felt like your energy and emotions move in cycles but couldn’t quite explain why, this is why. The moon has been keeping time all along.
